Autism can look different from person to person. Our evaluations look at social communication, sensory experiences, and repetitive or restricted patterns. We also review developmental history and consider how these traits affect daily life at home, school, work, and in relationships.
Some people learn to hide autistic traits. This is called masking or camouflaging. A person may copy social behaviors or hide sensory difficulties. They may appear comfortable while feeling overwhelmed inside. Masking can be common among AFAB individuals, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and students of color. Our evaluations look beyond outward behavior and consider less obvious forms of autism that may have been missed in the past.
PDA is also called Pervasive Drive for Autonomy. It involves a strong need to avoid or resist demands. Demand avoidance can be linked to anxiety and a strong need for control and autonomy. These behaviors may look like defiance or oppositional behavior. When appropriate, PDA-related traits can be explored as part of an autism evaluation.
ADHD can affect attention and organization. It can also affect executive functioning, working memory, and task completion. Testing can help clarify these concerns and identify other factors, such as autism, learning differences, or anxiety.
Children may need testing for many reasons, including learning, attention, behavior, development, or social communication concerns. Testing can identify strengths and challenges and provide useful recommendations for home and school.
