Family Inclusive Adult Evaluations

When independence and support both matter

Traditionally, psychology practices offer 2 types of evaluations—those for children (under 17 or 18 where the parents sign the consent) or those for adults, where the client themself must call to schedule, do all of the paperwork on their own, and are the main recipient of the evaluation information.

But sometimes it’s a little more complicated than that. Many of our clients find themselves at a place that feels somewhere between complete independence and still needing a little help. They are a young adult living at home, or maybe they are a little older but still struggle to keep up with all of the details of scheduling. Parents might spend time googling “failure to launch,” “supporting my adult child,” or “Adult ADHD or Autism Supports.” Sometimes they have a spouse who is really motivated to help their partner get an evaluation so they can get the understanding, support, or treatment they need.

Our approach

Executive functioning should not get in the way of your answers

We recognize that for many families, family members are just as invested in the outcome as the client themselves. They want to learn to support their adult child, and often, they have lots of information to share, and different types of questions about the results. For this reason, we offer family inclusive adult evaluations, and they are designed to provide answers for both the adult client and their family members.

What makes these different

How These Evaluations Differ

Our family inclusive adult evaluations are designed to make the process easier, more collaborative, and more useful for both the client and their family members.

  • Consent is built into the structure

A family member can schedule the evaluation and complete almost all of the intake paperwork. The only required initial paperwork from the client is a simple release of information form that requires an e-signature.

  • You decide what gets shared

Clients get to decide what gets shared with family and what stays private. We aim to protect our client’s autonomy by explicitly discussing what will—and will not—be shared with others.

  • Extended collateral interviews

We include interviews with more than one family member. Parents and siblings often remember childhood differently from each other, and these can be helpful information.

  • A plain-language family summary

Separate from the full report. The client approves it before anyone sees it. This includes how this person’s brain works, what helps, what backfires, and what to stop doing.

  • A one-page “how to support me” profile

Written with the client. They can hand it to family, a partner, roommates, or a manager. People tend to keep these long after the report is filed away.

  • Accommodation letters

For college disability services or an employer, if needed.

  • A curated resource packet

For the family, on relevant topics for the client.

  • Separate feedback sessions

One for the client (Understanding your Profile) and one for the parents / supporting family members (Family Support Strategy Session).

  • 90 Day Check-in (Optional)

Even the most motivated families can struggle to maintain momentum. A check-in session several months after the initial feedback can help increase accountability and support implementation.

Who would benefit from these evaluations?

  • Late teens or early 20s adults who are wanting to investigate autism, ADHD, or other mental health conditions with family support.
  • Parents who want to better understand their adult child so they can help them take the steps to thrive.
  • Older families where people are living together after years apart, and differing brain styles may be a part of the misunderstanding.
  • And many others…. Would you?

The families that usually choose these types of evaluations are serious about helping their child or family member better understand themselves and access supports. They recognize that getting information now can cause a real difference in the trajectory of their child’s life. They are ready to commit to understanding their child on their terms, and they are open to admitting that they might need some help understanding how they can best communicate with and support their child.
